Artist's Comments

Not often I photograph a racer from behind but I just happen to like this one. Plus it symbolises Will Davison's performance over the weekend at Eastern Creek - out front and in a league of his own (in race two at least, but that was only one of the three; he won the round overall too).

Also a departure is that I've applied a new technique - vignetting - courtesy of good my dA friend, *CoupeKid, whose news article gave a few techniques I'd not previously used. Thanks, Ben!

Update 19 March 2008: Some said it was a little too bright (or too much contrast, more specifically) so I've dropped both brightness and contrast a tad. The original upload can be found on my flickr profile.

have you always used photoshop or do you have adobe lightroom? i went through the news article and he uses photoshop to manually create his vignette and i guess if you use photoshop you use that to adjust colours, levels and everything. you might already know about it but lightroom is great. i think i remember reading something where you said you took 1,000 photos from one weekend of racing and if you've got that many, lightroom is miles ahead of photoshop. it takes the specifics that you want and need for editing photos (and it has a vignetting option that you can do without needing to select everything yourself) instead of having all the filters and everything else that photoshop has. if you don't already have it you should check it out mate.

and btw, great photo, a bit too much vignetting for mine but that's just me!

It's all Photoshop. You're not the first person to mention the apparent wonders of Lightroom to me, though, I have to say. Maybe one day I'll check it out. Certainly would have some advantages in so far as mass-editing is concerned.

And thanks for the critique. I edited this one so that full attention was thrown onto the car and nothing else, which is why the effect appears so strong.

Thanks bloke! I'm really happy with this one - in fact, right off the bat I was pleased with it, so that's why it's ended up here. :thanks:

I used vignetting on my latest photos and I'm really enjoying the results. Your work here was incredible, the vignette added quite an atmosphere to the photo!!

Aw Kay. Flattery will get you everywhere...

Thanks so much. I really, really like this one so I'm glad it drew your interest. Can hardly say it took a lot of work; about the most time-consuming item was desaturating the grass (cleanly) around the ripple strip. I'm very happy with the end result.

I like it a lot!

Great compsition and the idea is pretty neat.

The hard light on the car is a bit strong for me, is it the vignetting or other edit? its a bit like: BOOM light!

Anyway, great great stuff Daniel, can`t wait for the next one!
